hair cut was a really dignified
ceremony, with two or three attendants
standing around me, with water jugs,
soaps, shampoo, towels, washing bowl and

DRAMAS AND PLAYS

 My
earliest memory of such a drama is the
one I saw in the present Municipal
grounds (then known as Ayyangavu
padam) in Irinjalakuda. As the
monsoons withdraw, the padam
(paddy field) dries up and becomes the
venue for important events, like sports,
football and badminton matches, the
circus, dramas, etc

Kizhuthani Shappu Alirangan Undo?
(Any body getting down at the Mapranam /Chelur/Kizhuthani
Shop?) on different bus routes from our
town.

THE TAILOR STORIES

 My
earliest memory of a tailor goes to a
lean, short, and rather fair old person,
with a wrinkled face. None of us knew
his real name. Every one used to call
this Christian tailor as “Moyalan”.
I used to enquire, with every body, to
why be he called Moyalan.

I remember correctly, there were only
two taxi cars in our town when we were
kids. They belonged to two Christian
owner-operators, by name Vazhakkala and
Padinjarekkaran. (I do not remember
their first names). Their cars were
both huge and belonged to the late
thirties model of Chevrolet....

robbers, thieves and dacoits have played
a major role in the history, legends,
fairy tales, and fiction and even in the
personal lives of men and women in one
way or the other. Our Irinjalakuda had
only very few thieves and robbers during
our childhood.

Catholic priest who was honored by the
Government of India (2007, with the
civilian title of Padmabhushan for his

THE
HEALTHCARE
The earliest physician who came to my
memory was the good old Kuttan Menon.
Menon was an Ayurvedic Physician (Vaidyan),
taking care of the health problems of
the members of the families of our
place. Menon used to come from
Nadavarambu in a covered ornamental cart
drawn by a single bull (Otta Kala
Vandi).

introducing bus transport in the then
principality. According to the old
timers, late Pichu Iyer (Pichu Swami)
earns the credit for introducing a bus

നാളില് കൊടിയറി തിരുവോണം നാള് ആറാട്ട്
(1952 മെയ് 6-ാം തിയ്യതി കൊടികയറി 16-ാം
തിയ്യതി ആറാട്ട്) ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന
കാര്യദര്ശിയായി ‘മാണിക്യന് കേരളന്’
എന്ന തച്ചുടയ കൈമളും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ
സഹായിക്കുന്നതിന് ദേവസ്വം സൂപ്രണ്ട്
പി.രാമന് പിള്ളയും കൊടിയേറ്റം കഴിഞ്ഞ്
പിറ്റെ ദിവസം കൊടിപ്പുറത്തു വിളക്കുമാത്രമെ
വിര്വഹിക്കുന്നുള്ളു.

In view of Dr Tharoor’s last
controversy, the Indian Premier League
is now called as“ the Indian Political
League” !!!!!
 The
Congress High Command may now be
feeling that they made a mistake in
nominating him at Trivandum and could
have given the seat to Mr Tom Vadakkan,
Secretary and its one of spokesmen who
would have done a better job. ( I am
sorry Dr Sukumaran Azhicode may not like
this because “ Tom Vadakkan “ does not
speak decent
Malayalam !! ).
In view of Dr Tharoor’s last

Radio in the Municipal Park
 I
recently read a news item from
Irinjalakuda on the “switch-on” function
of the radio in the Municipal Park by
Municipal Chairman Jackson in presence
of Satish Puliath and Jose Katla. This
news item touched my heart and took me
to the yester years when the radio in
the Municipal Park was functional. I
believe majority of the current
population in Irinjalakuda can not
relate to the importance of such an
“insignificant event”.

AMMA vs. THILAKAN
, the great “ Perundachan” of the
Malayalam Cinema
Thilakan is old but he has not become
senile. There may be future actors who
could replace today’s superstars but it
will be difficult to replace an
irreplaceable like Thilakan in the near
future. AMMA has appointed a “
Disciplinary Committee “ to solve the
issues and it is headed by Innocent who
does not have an impartial view and
talks and behaves with certain
pre-conceived notions. The others
include T P Madhavan and Edavela Babu,
as compared to Perundachan, are the
plants born with yesterday’s rains !!
